The Education of Little Tree was written by Forrest Carter in 1976.

It's about a young Native American boy, Little Tree, who lives in the early 1900's. He goes to stay with his grandmother and grandfather at their cabin in the forest. But he is taken away from them by US government officials, who think he is not getting a proper education, and made to go to boarding school a long way away. He finds that what he is made to learn there is not important for his life, and he is so unhappy that he tries to run away several times. Eventually he succeeds and returns to his grandparent's house in the forest.

It's a wonderful book. Many teachers read it to understand how Native Americans taught their children. Check out your school library to see if it's available.
